hello again!

The weather here in Arusha is still all moody and rainy, the mountain was beautiful sunshine at the bottom this afternoon with a complete storm going on at the top! anyway, Gordon the dog and i are just relaxing and uploading more imagery from the fashion show if you care to take a look....

ps. the fashion show is going on tour soon, to the commercial capital, Dar Es Salaam....

hello everyone!

So, after a very long time i have found the time to blog again. I've managed to find time to read Witchmountain and Laurenchericedesigns blogs! they both keep great ones, which are always worth reading.

well, life here in Tanzania, is very English-like this week. rainy, cold and dark. Rubbish!

Here's Gordon laying under the umbrella outside the house.

I was lucky enough a few weeks ago to be involved in some of the designing for Schwari Collectables. which is based here in Arusha, Tanzania. Schwari, was one of the collections to be part of Maridadi Fashion show at Arusha Hotel. the fashion show saw some beautiful designs for all over the world. it was also in support of a rape and sexual abuse crisis center, based in Tanzania, such a worthy cause as it supports so many needy people.

here follows some imagery from Schwari which was on the catwalk.

the materials are all hand dyed, then beaded by clever Maasai girls who live locally. The 2010 collection last year was subdued colours so this year was quiet the turn around showing lovely brights. Hopefullt i managed to add a slight western touch to some of the designs??!

new art and days at work in Africa....

After working at the restaurant here, i've been going back to my house and creating canvas' to hang at work. now its time to blog about it as i'm taking the night off but might have to go in a minute as the watchman is bringing food for the dogs and it takes at least two of us to feed them because they fight all the time!

my new canvas' are inspired by florals and love, some have a mixture of paint and embroidery and while others are just one or the other....
these three are for the big back wall of the restaurant and the center one has a variety of beads from Josie-Rose, a great website for all sorts of things embroidery-wise in the uk!

there is one box framed one which is a complete embroidery, but it took so many hours to do i'm going to see if there any interest from buyers before i start on a new one!

i think the embroidery is my favorite. (and an update on the dog feeding antics....theres no food that i can bring for them tonight as the bar i'm buying it from has sold it already! but dont worry everyone,especially you, Annie Craston i'm cooking rice for them instead! Annie and Lauren stayed with me for a month, and the house is very much empty without them!)

in other news....
i've been creative at work too, painting blackboards and borders on the walls. what do you think??

and this little guy was hanging around outside today, just blending into the scenery. someone tried to whack it with a sweeping brush, but i stepped in. (hooray!)

i'd love to hear any comment you have about my work or otherwise!....

while i'm here in africa again, tanzania, east africa incase you didnt know....i'm doing some art and design stuff in a sparse free time to display in galleries across the city-thats the plan anyway!

This starling postcard dropped through the door this morning and reminded me of how only a year ago, we were off to New Designers ourselves in hope of fame and fortune! i can hardly believe that it was 12 months ago as so much has happened over the last year....

After i visited the CCAD degree show last thursday night i have been given a huge incentive to pick up some embroidery again. I really miss all the drawing, designing and making we got to do at college and i know a lot of others would agree with me but it has become hard to find the time. So this week i'm making a specail effort to create something new. if only i could stop going to work long enough to pay a visit to Kim on Witchmountain!! who by the way ahs a giveaway at the moment, what are you waiting for?! enter it!!

I'm having a bit of trouble with the image upload (again) so they're all at the top, sorry!!

By the time i finishe this new embroidery i want it to be as embelished as my degree work 2010....lets see if i have the patience again?

So today i went to Ripley Castle to the creative dezigns summer sale. lots of lovely stands selling handmade things from clothes to jewellry, and all in the beautiful setting of Ripley Castle.... i was particulary taken with the stand from Lime Tree Design who had some great prints. amongst others i really liked Sophie Likes too, some great little painted and glazed porcelaine buttons for special touches here and there were the nicest things.... the event runs until this sunday.

last thursday, i went to ccad degree show opening night and was wowed by the work-possibly it gave my own graduating year a run for its money! the most outstanding things were from Anni Craston, Lauren Cherice and anni and lauren will both come over to join me in Tanzania to volunteer their time as teachers this summer as part of the Touch Africa Adventures team. see their blogs via the links....

I was lucky enough to have a link of mine shared by lovely friend and fellow artist, Kim Tillyer this week too from Witchmountain, hopefully next week i'll have time to visit her and create some masterpieces!

there'll be pictures of my time at Ripley as soon as i work out how to get them from phone to computer!

Back in Africa and i've been asked to complete some illustrations for a Maa (Maasai) - English phrase book aimed towards tourism in Arusha, Tanzania. The brains behind the idea is Dr. Jaeheon Lee from Korea. ALL proceeds from the sales of the books will be donated to the primary education and health care of Maasai children.

it's just been too long since i wrote anything last. What with the snow (and serveral mishaps involving it) going back to College to have a day in the sewing room in return for some advice for the current third years (yeah right!) and designing freelance, its all been a bit hectic.... (i wish i'd bought that Benina sewing machine that was for sale when was at college whan i had the chance!!) third years, if any of you are reading this-sieze your chance and get your hands on one!!!

And most of all i'd love to post some pictures of what i've been designing, but i can't! you'll have to wait until at least a/w 2011 to go to the shops and see them....College was always banging on about mood boards, trend boards, current high street research and i don't think i ever realised just how relivant it all was until now. when my skills have been put into practice, so i am eternally grateful, especailly to the lecturer's, in particular-Claire Baker, who, by the way was also at Designers Marketplace selling tonnes of fantastic laser cut stuff.

As this post was going to lack images, here's a snowy scene from my mum's house to make this blog a bit more colourful.... And now it's nearly the end of the year, again, (not the best one i've ever experienced in some ways, but a great one in so many other respects) i am determined to give 2011 all i've got....

i recon, if i take a risk and it turns out good, well, whats not to like about that?

Sorry it's been about a million years since i last blogged! i'm still living in Africa, Tanzania to be exact and the tine is wizzing by me.... it'd turning up the heat here now, so hot a spend my days dashing from shady spot to shady spot....

it's my graduation in a couple of weeks so i'm uk bound for that. i feel really important when i get to say i'm a qualified designer! it all seems to unreal!!.... continuing on the topic of design, i received an email last week from a company who i did some design work for before jetting to Africa. i had all but given up on ever hearing anything but alas-an email of positives came my way.... i can't say more yet though-it's a secret!!

design was something i never thought Tanzania to be awash with opportunities for, but this time i've been completely amazed at just how many businesses there are here producing some of the most beautiful designs i've ever seen. I'm still finding it as inspirational as ever here, and accidentally today i stumbled upon this website, www .loveliveafrica.com and i've been sat here for ages just listening to the music and looking at the images. If you're going to look at that link, you must also read Witchmountains latest blog on life on the North Yorkshire Moors, England.

So i'm really not sure life can get much better?! you tell me! everywhere i look here i find my sight full of an image that is worthy of a photograph, whether it's women carrying unbelievable loads on their heads, or a misty, sleepy mountain in the early morning sunshine....

arusha, africa, and Lake Natron....

How very inspirational Tanzania is becoming at the moment!! i've spent the last few days in Lake Natron visiting the beautiful waterfalls and the Lake itself, observing flamingos and other wildlife. at the edge of the rift valley the views were really spectacular and have given me plenty of ideas for new art work when i return to england in November....

Once back in the UK i have an embroidery workshop to run as well as featuring with Kim Tillyer of Witchmountain at the Designers Marketplace in middlesbrough on the 22nd November!....

the exhibition at TS1 Gallery is due to come down this week, but they took a lot of my jewellry collection to sell in the shop so you never know, thay might owe me money when i get back!!

these pictures are of Oldonyo Lengai in the rift Valley, (the beautiful mountain) and also the amazing waterfall, as well as a view on my way to the Lake!
are you jealous??!

Gallery TS1, Middlesbrough....

Hi there, it's been ages since my last update.... things have been really really busy but i have time just now to tell you about a current exhibition thats running in Middlesbrough on Corporation Road at Gallery TS1....

It's called the ''Migration and sacred place exhibition'' and is running until the 9th October, i am amongst the exhibitors displaying four photographs of my own dipicting a migration i took through Tanzania, Africa last August (2009). Please go along and see it! My photos are accompanied by the story behind them, now that is worth a read if i do say so myself!

It's a lovely little gallery and has workshops frequently so that you can try being creative for yourself! As well as a gift shop which is stocked by local artists work.... It's a huge supporter of the local community and students/local artists so it really is worth a trip down....They Gallery also said they would stock my jewellery collection so you never know, fame and fortune here i come??!!

Alternatively, i've been busy working on a sample brief for marks and spencer/NEXT in hope of future freelance work.... although i can't post any of the images on here to update you, it seems to be going pretty well.... Well, we will see won't we?....

Westport opening night....work from Workhouse studios....

For those of you that don't know, i'm cuerrntly in southern Ireland in Waterford working in a textiles studio....it's called Workhouse studios and consists of a small team of designers who create beautiful work from jewelry to glass.

last week we took a road trip to Westport where the designers were exhibiting their collections. We arrived on opening night here's how it went down in pictures....

the exhibtion is running until 12th september 2010....

the gallery was packed after the officail opening, and these people even managed to sneak in beforehand...

Well, it's the beginning of the second week here in Waterfors, southern ireland.... and so far it seems to be going quite well. tomorrow i'm back at the Workhouse studio's to start some work with Ann, a scarf desinger. i've made an ETSY sale this week, so check my shop! and will be having a small exhibition on saturday 28th august as part of the Workhouse Studio's open day. included in my collection will be these laser cut hair slides and brooch....

(notice my new packaging idea, borrowed from a gallery called Kaleidoscope, in Westport, ireland. it's a brand new little shop and i haven't been able to find a link to their website yet.....)

Ok so pardon the pun regarding the Irish please! everyone here is lovely! I'm in Waterford, southern Ireland, and yes, that is where they make the crystal before you even ask....

For the next two weeks, i am working as part of the Workhouse Studio team in Kilmacthomas they are a team of 6 designers who produce jewlery and beautiful products, check my link....

Today i spent the day putting up signs to advertise an open day the studio is having a week on saturday, 28th August 2010 this is when i'll get to exhibit my designs in laser cutting i did on my preivious work placement at Zap Creatives, Middlesbrough, N.E England....hooray finally!!

I'm heading up to West Port on thursday to spend the night there and attend an exclusive opening night of some of the Workhouse studio's designers work.... so that should be exciting! i'm trying my best to take photo's to fill me full of inspiration but am always too busy gawking around or talking to remember....ah well!!

sales, an extremely rare night out and Africa....

So, i feel as if we haven't spoken for a long while, even though it can't be that long, surely? well anyway, i just thougth i'd let you know that i've had a little success this week, i have passed my first exam for Teaching English as a Foreign Language and have made a private sale on ETSY! yay! this is the item below....It's hand dyed cotton and silk, (by me!) machine embroidered and hand beaded, it took some hours i can tell you! it depicts a carousel horse leaping into the air....

Last weekend went down nicely too, with a busy saturday night at work, followed by a trip to the local club with lovely friends and dancing until the early hours....

(''i think i'm going to go to bed, the sun has just come up!....'')

oh, it looks a bit packed here doesn't it? i abandoned this part of the club and escaped upstairs to a R&B night. excellent news.

Last weekend my artistic friend from witchmountain also made an ETSY sale, and has MANY more lovely things for you all to fall in love with.
Africa is also on the carsds again, see you soon, Tanzania!

and, no, that is not a baby bump you see, it is in fact my bag before another person tells me i look pregnant!

I recieved a lovely message from Katy Howieson via facebook when i got home tonight, she creates beautiful accessories with a vintage feel and they are wonderful! make sure you check out her blog and ESTY shop too. She was kind enough to use one of my laser cut brooch images in her latest wedding moodboard, i think you'll agree, it is lovely lovely lovely!

I was also kindly taken out for dinner tonight by a very nice friend, so should be fully rested and energised for tomorrows brooch making session in preparation for Ireland in a couple of weeks. Infact the brooch making might just have to be squashed into the morning as i am hoping to go swimming to Hemsley outdoor pool with my friend Kim, from Witchmountain.... she's busy designing and making at the moment too, i saw a beautiful little girls t shirt she had made the other day, it was sooo adorable!

crazy laser cutting days....

Well, it's been a hetic two weeks at my work placement, Zap! creations, in middlesbrough. i've learnt a tonne of new things and have been lucky enough to design and cut some designs of my own, which i will take with me to Ireland in August to hopefully sell at my work placement there....we will see....the laser cut range of earrings, brooches and hair accessories will be available on my ETSY shop from this weekend, so keep at eye out! here's a taster of SOME of the designs so far....(including the bottom item which are the tiny cute earrings!).... The designs are made from acrylic and some are eco friendly and are 100% recycled cardboard, i have to say, it'd those ones that are my favourties!

new beginnings....

After all the excitment that was New Designers i feel so back to 'normal' now, i'm wondering if it ever happened?!! i'm currently doing a 2week intership at Zap Creatives in Middlesbrough to gain more knowledge on laser cutting....it's very very interesting and i drew up some designs of my own today to be experimented with later, so watch my ETSY shop for the actual products! there's nothing specific that i'm basing the laser products on really, just love and my doodles!!

I did want to just use cardboard to cut out on, but after seeing how many coloured acrylics there are at Zap i just know i want to try them all!

Other things i've been doing are buying too many second hand books from amazon and reading into the small hours....i'm about halfway through 'the last maasai warrior' and it has been fantastic so far....

As always though, i am really wanting to return home to Tanzania.... September is when i'm able to go again. i cannot tell you how happy i'll be!

I'm still following up a couple of New Designers work, so fingers crossed i can get some freelance work before Tanzania to make some money!

new designers success!

After a week at New Designers, and getting home far too late last night, normality has started again and i don't like it! i was quite enjoying the crazyness of London tank you very much!!

here's a quick over view of my week....if you're interested??

Monday-arrived and dropped off ALL exhibition stuff to ND's. after sitting between carriages all the way to London on the train because two old ladies were in our seats.

Tuesday-put whole show up, very long day and everyone was so tired. But it went pretty well....

Wednesday-12 hours at the exhibition, press and awards day too. well done to everyone who won something! and then the after party at Pitcher and Piano with the worlds best DJ. undesputed!

Thursday-saw a basso & brooke exhibition at the design center before strolling around London town. Got called into ND even tough it was my day off to show my work to a potential employer. saw The Lion King in the evening at the Lyceum theatre, of course- i cried at the beginning!!

Friday-working on the stand at ND's all day, out for drinks in the evening with fellow graduates. and got to show my portfolio to another guy who is interesting in maybe employing me! very exciting!

Saturday-Camden Lock Market baby!! was visually amazing! then managed to swing some tickets for Jersey boys this evening, whilst walking to the theatre through Gay Pride celebration!

Sunday-working all day at ND's again, before pulling the whole show down and hot footing it to the train station at 9pm to come home....

The hand and lock embroidery competition deadline is looming and i've managed to pull myself away from new designers organisation to get some initail entry photos together....

i've spent so much time showing people my work recently, at college, interviews, general friends and family the lidt is never ending.... but one thing i did discover is that no one seems to realise that any colour of fabric, any printed surface or dye/printing paste has been selected, experimented to no end with to achieve the perfect hue. not just bought ready to use within designs! i think quite a few people have found this on the textiles and surface design course....

It's now tuesday and after replenishing my postcards and business cards in my show bay this morning i spent another hour wandering around, at leisure this time taking in everone's wonderful work with my friend helen....

Well, after all that work, the big opening has now been and gone.... it was a massive sucess and congratulations to everyone as all the work looked amazing, i just hope we get lots of people through the doors to come and appriciate it!

Well, as the end draws ever closer i thought i'd just update with some final photos of here and there around college....this picture is part of my final designs being cut by the laser cutter to make brooches. It is incredible to watch it and the results are beautiful! even if i do say so myself! After all the silk screen printing was over for my final major project it was down to cleaning the screens....a hated job by all printers everywhere, except i seem to have it down to a fine art now i'm leaving college-typical! here's some pictures of what i had to contend with in the dreaded exposure room....

The poor old print room looked too empty without the printing fanatics like sammy-jo stephenson and Sarah Hesletine in there....

Furthermore, 14 of us have been selected to exhibit at the Islington Business Design Center, London 28th june - 4th july 2010; at "New Designers" myself included so i'm sooo excited for it! hopefully a lot of useful contacts can be established.... Congratulations to everyone going! ....

These images are just a couple of close ups of my work, inspired by my favorite thing in the world, Love.... shame i always hold a losing hand when it comes to playing the game....maybe, just maybe, this might change?

Easter sewing madness....

Well thank you everyone who contributed to by lovely 22nd birthday this last monday! now it's back to the good old college work, but the embroidery has become sooo difficult i'm now sewing with a thimble and a pair of pliers! never mind, i'm sure the end results will pay that off (hopefully!)
i've now also managed to get some of my laser cutting done, so i feel i'm on the home straight a bit more, thankfully! as well as some more machine embroidery before we broke up for Easter....

so, it's only seven weeks or something until the final hand in and i'm really trying to pull some rabbits out of hats! i'm chasing laser cutter technology, but everywhere is very, very expensive or just too far away.... hopefully i'll get something sorted soon!?well, in the next seven weeks really!!
our degree show is on the 4th - 10th june, or so i think but i'm not too sure.... so i'll confirm it at a later date. someone from my class is sure to know....
i'll be uploading some exciting laser cut pictures soon (fingers crossed!)

well, here are my lastest achievements!! the first deisgn of major project, scary to think that 60% of the whole degree is depending on what marks i get from doing these pieces of work!
am feeling better about the whole broken heart thing too by the way, i'm sure you're dying to know that!
this piece is one design from a collection of neckpieces and brooches....yes it has taken me forever with all the stitching, hopefully the snow will stay away for this week so i can get to kim tillyers house and be more productive!

how can i just have realised?

Visiting London on tuesday was really cool, as i could scout round the shops and pick up on trends and become inspired for my own work....as to be honest, i've been lacking the ideas just recently! now though, i am full of inspriation and ready to pull out the stops!!

Love, L.O.V.E, romance.... i'm thinking of incorporating the old 'L' word into my final major project, in a sort of romantic imagery kind of way. i intend on making neckpieces from maasai inspired collars and beading, but using sweet little love birds and roses as appliqued enhancements....

so this is how it looks at my house at the moment....i think its very exciting although my friend kim tillyer is completely house bound!
i've been busy with college work today as i didn't make it in again, so have been working from home....
would love to be painting more canvases for Etsy though instead! then at least i feel i'm doing something really productive!

so, the snow came and i'm house bound for a while....but its given me time to start research properly for my major project, due in in june this year-or is it may actually?!
i'm thinking of taking a slightly different approach to the major project and not focusing so much on Tanzania for once, just to give my portfolio a different entry! but of course, the concept behind my idea is of tanzania and the colour pallette shall be of muted african tones too....

Well this is me in my Maasai clothes in tanzania...
i'm back in the uk now, and missing africa sooo much!

i'm in the process of opening an Etsy shop online so hopefully that will be ready soon and you can all see my designs and products!

there was lots of snow here while i was away and this is what greeted me on the train from Manchester airport....
For christmas, i painted my dad a canvas, and i am now working towards creating a whole series of these canvas' as they would look better as a set of three or four....i intend to use serveral differernt animals or african figures....look out for them on etsy!

Well, minor project of third year hand in tomorrow, everyone's work looked great in the studios today when people were beginning to display it all....couldn't really do a whole lot with my own display, but never mind! fingers crossed now for a good mark after all the hours i've put in! these images are from concept book to final designs....

Well, i told you it would be a productive day....i finished a sixth collection....hooray!

I also painted a canvas, the concept behind it is the pure abandon that comes from been the looser in a relationship....i have tried to express how it feels to give everything you have to someone, only for them to smash your world and leave you, thinking of what could've been and the awful emptiness they've left behind them....i've written very small feelings within the painting too, how they change from the beginning to the end of a relatioship....i'm sure you've all felt like this at some point??

i've started planning Christmas card designs this week.... alongside the college work of the travel journals....

i started with this festive one, he has a stitched nose! there are also a range of fairies, baubles, stars and hearts....

Well, i'm trying hard to do some work, but after packaging about 2 billion cards (or so it seemed) for Knitting and Stitching show Harrogate yesterday it would now appear i'll have to make more, as i'm going to be at Northallerton Town Hall this Saturday afternoon with a stall of bags and jewellery. . . .

The friday after, i'll be at Worsall Village Hall from 7:30pm onwards with a full range of my work....it's a ladies night, so hopefully they'll want lots of lovely gifts i can supply them with in time for Christmas!! there is Thorntons chocolate company going, a nail bar, lingerie stand and a whole host of other stalls....tickets are £3-50 on the door....

These images are of current college work which are the travel journal designs, they include a front cover and three examples of the inside pages....i think they're coming along quite well....

the final collections will be individual within each design but they should all fit together as a complete set when all 4 are viewed together, i hope!

well after a fun saturday night after waitressing, it was time yesterday to continue with the hard work....

again i visited Kim Tillyer http://witchmountain.wordpress.com/ and together we worked hard all day, me on college related travel journal designs and her on some really cute little purses, perfect for stocking fillers at Christmas i thought!!

i'm seeming to get more work done at Witchmountain than the rest of the week at college.... it can be very motivating to just sit in the peace and quiet with another designer and work away....

this is a view from Kim's kitchen window, i thought in this post i'd show you some examples of college work in working progress....some dye samples, final designs and how the front of my wardrobe is doubling as a place to store drawing sheets....

here they are....hopefully i'll end up with a stunning collection of travel journals?!

i've just been informed that we should create a range each of products suitable for the knitting and stitching show in Harrogate in a few weeks time! as if i haven't got enough work to do!!

i will be having a stall at Worsal Village Hall on friday the 27th November 2009, 7pm onwards, please come along and see me.... other stands that will be there include Thorntons chocolate shop-yum!

also, on the 6th December, (sunday) i am hoping to be feauring at Osmotherley Village Hall at the christams extravaganza, Lewis and Cooper and Roots will be there too....

Over the weekend i exhibited some work at Guild Hall in York. Here are some images of my stand.... i learnt a lot for the experience and also gained some useful contacts for the future, but definately couldn't have done it without Kim Tillyer, who was a lifesaver, coming with me on the first day; casting an expert eye over how was best to set up and directing me to the Hall in the first place!

At the weekend, i will be attending my first fair, at Guild Hall, York.... exhibiting a range of handmade womens clothing,(from traditional east african fabrics), handmade tanzanian jewellery, handmade cotton shopping bags and some gouache & batik paintings.
